Johannes curch square Freiburg

At the edge of Freiburg’s old town, St. John’s Church and the surrounding buildings form a spacious, highly frequented urban space with a great urban flair. However, the open space planning potential of the area lies fallow, the square lacks a unified design concept, the transitions to the adjacent street spaces are unresolved, and the lack of spatial formation does not allow a square atmosphere to emerge. The task is to transform this fragmented urban space into an attractive square with a high quality of stay and thus to form an identity-creating link between the Wiehre district, the old town and the river Dreisam.
